Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP)

If you think you may have been exposed to HIV due to having unprotected sex or as a result of a broken condom during fucking, or sharing a needle when injecting, there is a treatment available that may reduce the risk of becoming HIV positive.

The treatment is known as post-exposure prophylaxis or PEP. PEP is a combination of at least tow, sometimes three, anti-HIV drugs that are used to treat people with HIV infection. It is best to start this treatment no later than 72 hours after possible exposure to HIV, as it may reduce the risk of the person becoming infected with HIV. The earlier PEP treatment is commenced, the more likely it is at being effective.

If you believe you may have been exposed to HIV you should contact your doctor or sexual health center as soon as possible and ask about PEP. If it is after hours you should contact your nearest emergency room.
